Strange things happen in the Alaska bush. The native Alaskans say that a white man, too long alone out there will go mad. Gus O'Neill suspects it may have happened to him. His two best friends, Hard Case Calis the old Alaska State Trooper, and Haywood Jennings the flying veterinarian think so too. Gus spends a summer on Moose Jaw Creek where he builds a cabin, finds a ravaged red-haired beauty he comes to love, and murders the man who had sexually molested her. When Haywood flies in to join Gus for a moose hunt he finds his friend alone and raving. There is no evidence that Gus' redhead or the dead man he claims to have killed ever existed.
Gus is baffled by the disappearance of his woman and the body of his victim, but he agrees to join Haywood on a moose hunt. While getting in position to drive a large bull toward Haywood, Gus is attacked by a giant grizzly that has been stalking him. He manages to kill the bear but is badly mauled in the process. Haywood finds Gus and the dead bear, and flies his injured friend back to Fairbanks for treatment. The following day Haywood returns to Gus' cabin with Hard Case to deal with the dead bear. During the flight they discuss Gus' condition and his weird tale about the woman he had found and the man he'd killed. They agree Gus must have gone a little crazy while out there alone. Things become complicated when, back in the woods near Gus' cabin, they find no bear carcass. Haywood insists he had seen and touched its dead body just yesterday. The two friends return to Fairbanks as mystified as Gus. When Hard Case unearths an unsolved case file that dates back more than forty years, it becomes clear that Gus may not have imagined the woman or the murder after all. Strange things happen in the Alaska bush.

Fergus O'Neil is having a really bad day having lost his construction contract job and his wife leaving him as well. Returning from England he makes a brief stop in his hometown in Colorado but then decides to travel on to a parcel of land he owns in the wilderness of Alaska to spend the summer and build a permanent cabin. Things go well for a couple of months then in late August one day he discovers a woman lying beside Moose Creekunconscious and bleeding. Gus takes her back to his cabin, treats her wounds and once she revives she tells him a chilling story of what has happened.
In the author's note at the front of the book I quote...."There is no impenetrable barrier that separates the "real world" from the "spirit world"..and this forms the premise for this haunting book. I will leave it to the reader to explore this apparent connection.
The author has written a fantastic tale set in the wilds of Alaska. His prose is clear and very descriptive and as I read the book I felt I was right beside Gus as he faces the daily challenges of survival both physically and mentally. I also really enjoyed the relationship between Gus and his best friend Haywood, a sometimes bush pilot who helps Gus on his summer adventure. This is the first of three books in the series and is fantastic. I highly recommend it.

The Moose Jaw The Fergus O'Neill Series Book 1 edition by Mike Delany Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Wow. What a fantastic story of one man's unforgettable summer in the Alaskan bush. Gus O'Neill needs a break from life, so he decides to partake on an excursion into the wilds north of Fairbanks, Alaska. Rebuilding an old cabin on some property he acquired, he sets about making his homestead into a home. With a warning from a local who told him spirits can affect lonely white men, Gus pushes that old superstition out of his mind. Once at the site, he constructs his new cabin and soon is at peace with the land he now calls home. Typical Alaskan wildlife surround him...grizzlies, moose, geese, and of course, his favorite, the salmon and other fish from the river. Soon though, he notices a few things that aren't in order, and when a strange and mysterious visitor happens upon his land, Gus's summer vacation takes on a whole new meaning. I won't divulge any more than that, but to say this book is one of the best I've read in a while. Despite a somewhat slow start, the story becomes tremendously interesting, with a sled-load of suspense, intrigue, and action. Very unusual twists and some inexplicable happenings keep the reader in total suspense. Very well-written, as I could literally feel the breeze in the treetops, hear the water rushing by, and feel the cold snapping at my face. Awesome book.
Mike Delany is an author I had never read before but since I have visited in Alaska (and enjoyed my travels there) I decided to give his series (The Moose Jaw Series) a try. I'm glad that I did. His characters and their stories are quite articulated as he draws the reader into the daily routine of wilderness living. Non native residents have been known to experience strange conditions and this is what happens to Gus as he buildings his own cabin on the Moose Jaw River. Time keeps getting reversed to the late 1950's and unexplained events happen to him.
Very readable....all 3 volumes of this series. I just finished the 3rd one and was sad to find that the series consists of only those 3. I was hoping to continue the daily lives of the people I had met (and enjoyed knowing). Hopefully, in the near future, Mr. Delany WILL write further books to this series. I intend to keep a close future watch, to enjoy adding those to my library (from ) in case he does!!
I recommend these stories. Hope that you will enjoy them, too. Louise Mustain 10-3-2016
I really liked the Alaskan adventure aspects of the book and, quite honestly, the story made me want to keep reading. But once I arrived at the (what I found to be) creepy sexual fantasy stuff with a ghost-woman, it was a struggle to get through the rest. I thought I found a good Alaska adventure series, but this was not it. These kinds of hallucinations for one man in an Alaskan cabin may very well be common, but the graphic intimacy was just weird. Good writer; weird story. I do not planning on reading further into this series.
